Another defeat for a Bush ally!  Serves ‘em right!

Some quotes from the article….

Mr. Howard’s defeat, after 11 years in power, follows that of José María Aznar of Spain, who also backed the United States-led invasion of Iraq, and political setbacks for Tony Blair of Britain.”

“Mr. Rudd, 50, campaigned on a platform of new leadership to address broad concerns about the environment, health and education.  He has said his first acts as prime minister would include pushing for the ratification of the Kyoto agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and negotiating the withdrawal of Australia’s 500 troops from Iraq.”

And maybe my favorite… “Mr. Howard may suffer the indignity of losing his own seat in the Sydney suburb of Bennelong, which he has held for 33 years, to a former television anchor and rookie politician. He would be the first sitting prime minister to lose his seat since 1929.”

I hope the Dems can manage a similar rousing victory in 2008.  We need the Presidency and enough seats to get things done on global warming and health care, and oh yeah, Iraq.

Democrat’s State of the Union January 23, 2007

Very powerful response to Bush by Jim Webb, the new senator of Virginia (he beat macaca-man).

Here is the link.

Two major messages:

1. The economy may be doing well for the wealthy, but not so well for the middle class and the elected officials need to do something about it.

2. We need to get out of Iraq and engage in more resolute diplomacy.

Interestingly, he quoted two republican presidents who had dealt effectively with similar situations in the past. Teddy Roosevelt with the robber barons and Eisenhower with Korea.

The Democratic House made good on their first 100 hours pledge. Let’s see what the Senate makes of the bills. I am loving the new Dem. control! I heard on NPR yesterday that they are actually debating on plans to reduce greenhouse emissions!!

Here is a link to the bills passed the first 100 hours.

What a refeshing change… from flag burning bills to real bills.
