I was tooling around and found an article about the eggs we buy…. talks about the difference in cage free eggs.

This year, I have made a conscientious effort to buy organic fruits and veges and organic/humane meats and dairy.  Sure, it costs more, but with fruits and veges I figure we’re lowering our cancer risk and certainly lowering the damage done to the ecosystem.  With meats, I figure it’s better to let the animals run around a little and do their thing before I eat ’em.  Also, these meats and dairy products don’t use antibiotics and hormones, which is also good for the ecosystem (and ultimately our health).

Anyway, I’ve been buying “certified humane” eggs for some time now.  Yesterday, I actually read what that means and it says, “Meets the Humane Farm Animal Care Program standards, which include a nutricious diet without antibiotics, or hormones, animals raised with shelter, resting areas, sufficient space and ability to engage in natural behaviors.”  It was the last part that cracked me up.  I imagined a scene out of “Chicken Run”, where the hens are gathered around gossiping about egg production and such.

Anyway, I encourage everyone within earshot to go organic where possible.  I know it costs more, but it is what food should cost.
